Fats, Oils, and Grease Disposal

Fats, oils, and grease (“FOG”) can clog household drains, but were you aware that disposing of them improperly can create problems as severe as a sewer line backup?  95% of all sewer plugs result from grease build-up from cooking, garbage disposals, and dishwashers.  A clogged sewer pipe may result in sewage backing up into streets and parking lots.

To prevent these problems from happening, never put fats, oils, or grease down your drains.  Flushing drains with hot water is not enough to prevent FOG from causing problems.

To properly dispose of fats and grease:

  • Meat drippings such as hamburger and bacon – pour the liquid into a metal can and throw in the trash after it has solidified.
  • Butter, margarine, and gravies can be thrown directly into the trash.

 To properly dispose of oils:

  • Vegetable oil and cooking oil can be disposed of in the SSC curbside used oil recycling program along with motor oil.
  • All used oil should be placed in transparent plastic jugs.
  • Please write “used oil” on the container to assist SSC drivers.
