Art for Meridian City Hall!
Welcome! Through December 5, 2008, the Meridian Arts Commission is
seeking public input on three proposals for artwork to be displayed in City Hall.
In the spring of 2008, the Idaho Commission on the Arts awarded the Meridian Arts
Commission a generous Public Art and Cultural Facilities Grant to support the placement
of public art in the main lobby of City Hall and in the City Council chambers.
Proposals were requested from artists throughout the region (view the RFQ
here), and after
reviewing the submissions, three semi-finalists were selected:

J. AMBER CONGER proposes “Origin,” an abstract
interpretation of antique surveying equipment and compasses composed of steel, copper,
stainless steel, brass, and aluminum, to be suspended over the main lobby by galvanized
steel cable, and an untitled, multi-dimensional wall piece with information about
“Origin” to be displayed on the wall outside the Meridian City Council chambers.
Of “Origin,” Ms. Conger writes: “Although inspired by the past, the overall feel
of the piece will be uniquely modern; lines & shapes that came from the past
will represent the future of Meridian as a growing center of commerce & technology.”

FRANCIS FOX proposes an untitled sculpture composed of steel, wood,
and brass to be suspended over the main lobby. Mr. Fox writes: “The core
of the sculpture represents a milk-can, which refers to the old Meridian Creamery
established in 1897 and to Meridian's historic and present day dairy industry. The
wood elements of the sculpture evoke a reference to the old west and their form
activates the space in the large lobby. The expression of the sculpture is hopeful
and uplifting implying growth and prosperity.” Read Mr. Fox’s proposal

FILIP VOGELPOHL proposes an untitled, hand-blown
glass sculpture to be suspended over the main lobby, and an untitled dimensional
display on an acrylic back plate depicting historical elements of the Dairymen’s
Association to be displayed on the wall outside the Meridian City Council chambers.
Of the sculpture, Mr. Vogelpohl writes: “I have chosen some basic shapes and colors
which I feel will contribute to the wow factor in this installation.
This sculpture will provide a visual anchor and classic color against the monochromatic
back drop of the building.
It will serve as a crowd pleaser and will be the
focal point of the building.”
